Ornans, the little Venice of Franche-Comté
Crossed by the Loue, Ornans lines up its old houses, some on stilts, reflected in the river. You wander from bridge to bridge, then climb towards the Saint-Laurent church to enjoy the viewpoints. The Courbet Museum, in the painter’s birthplace, lets you discover the landscapes that inspired him, then find them for real as you step outside: a lovely idea for a first date.
Up to the source of the Loue
Further up the valley, the village of Mouthier-Haute-Pierre is the ideal starting point to reach the source of the Loue, which gushes out of a large cave at the foot of a cliff. The path, between gorges and forests, makes a magnificent walk for two at a gentle pace. On the way back, a stop at a cheese dairy to taste Comté is a must.
The Royal Saltworks and the Montbéliard area
In the west of the department, the Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans, a masterpiece by architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its semicircular layout, designed as an ideal city, is as impressive as it is intriguing. To the north, the Montbéliard area blends heritage and industrial history. On Lyad, Doubs members share their favourite places; it is up to you to find someone to enjoy them with.
